How to open your choice of image editors when
clicking the Edit button on the Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer screen.

OK...go to...Start / Run and type in..."regedit" without the
quotes. Then click...OK...or press...Enter.

In the Registry Editor...drill down to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

In the Data column you should see:

"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"

(where you see *mspaint* in the example....you will see
your current default)

Replace the key with the path to the program that will
be your default image editor. I wanted Picture It! 7 so
the following is what I changed to.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 7\pip.exe" "%1"

Now, my images still open in the Picture and Fax viewer
but if I left click the Edit button...Picture It! 7 opens.

Good luck.

Does this work for you?

I have set the image editor exact as you described, but
when I click the Edit button the Picture and Fax viewer
only closes and nothing more happens.

Sorry, but you have a different problem.

The OP stated: "right-click and edit brings up paint"
(This is a WinXP default and his system was operating correctly)

I simply gave him instructions on changing that default.

In your case....Paint does not open...I don't know a
fix for that.

If you go to...Start / Programs / Accessories / Paint...
can you open Paint?

If you go to...Add-Remove Programs / Windows Components...
is Paint checked under Accessories and Utilities?

You misunderstood. I don't want Paint to open.

I have Corel Photo Paint as the default editing program for images and have
set it up for that in the registry editor as you described that you did for
Picture It!

You click the edit button in Picture Viewer and Picture It! opens with the
picture. I click the edit button and nothing happens except Picture Viewer
closes.

See?

If you have it set up as per the instructions I
previously posted and it doesn't work...you
may have the path to Corel Photo Paint entered
incorrectly. Otherwise...I don't know what the
problem is.

Here's the entry that opens PI7.0 for me:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 7\pip.exe" "%1"

If you substitute the path to Corel's executable for
my path to pip.exe it should work...if not you have
other problems.

"Your Path Goes Here" "%1"
