Right-click somewhat dysfunctional

I'm running WinXP Pro SP1. In Windows Explorer, I can right-click on My
Computer, or UNC shares, or dirs and files on either local or mapped drives
and get the popup menu immediately. However, when I right-click on either a
local drive letter or drive letter mapped to a network share, I just get an
hourglass for about ten seconds or so, and then the Explorer Window
refreshes itself. No popup menu ever appears. There are a few shell
extensions installed (Winzip, McAfee, WS_FTP), but as these don't interfere
with the right-click menu for files or dirs I can't see why they should
affect it for drives.

Any suggestions?

I've got the same weird problem with being booted out of
windows explorer and back to the desktop...Someone help!

How is it the same wierd problem. The original poster does not get booted to the desktop. As already we can see it's not are we to assume that your other symptoms are the same or completely different too.

To original poster,

Type Regedit in Start Run
Goto

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

Export all three keys. Delete all three. What happens.

Ok, it's not exactly the same problem..when he right
clicks on his local drives, his computer
apparently "refreshes" itself and pops back to windows
explorer. When I right click on mine (in an attempt to
get to drive properties) mine also "refreshes", windows
explorer shuts down, and I'm brought to my desktop (which
has the icons temporarily missing for @ 2 seconds). So
it's not the same, but its similar. I've run a virus
check on the computer, I've run chkdsk, I've defraged the
harddrive, still have this weird problem.

Try the same thing. See what happens.

In technical matters preciseness is required.

You are lucky in that there should be a crash log somewhere. Look in Event Viewer and try to get some info on the crash.

Thanks. It was something to do with HKCR\Drive\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers.
Seeing that the problem only happened with drives, I exported and deleted
that key, and now right-click on drive letters works.

Is there a crash message as well.

No. 1 means you on network and they control your thoughts, opps your computer.

No 2 is the special treatment Explorer gets when it crashes.

Is there another entry in Application log at that time.

Did you export and delete those keys.

Couldn't find a crash message...I did the export and
deleted those keys and now it works. Thanks! Anything
else I need to do?

Import one by one (double cklick it) and see which export caused the problem. Post that file here.

ok, I imported them all back and the one causing the
problem is:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\contextMenuHandlers

Go back in the registry to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers and delete the sub keys one by one till the problem goes away (you still have your exported file don't you, if not remake it first).

4 of these are standard XP's menus and these rarely cause problems.

2 are not.

Firstly identify {0EA8D864-8701-11D3-81CA-009027571347} by looking up
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0EA8D864-8701-11D3-81CA-009027571347}
and look for a sub key with the word server in it (eg inprocserver32 is the most likely). This will contain the file that runs to do the menu. Look up this file in Explorer and r/c it and choose properties. This most likely identify the version and company that made it. The folder name will give a hint too.

Post what you find here then delete this one from the drive key 1st and Norton's second. If the problem still exist delete the inbuilt one's one by one.
