Right Click & Scan

Dunno if this has been asked, but would you make it
possible to add Spyware to the right click menu, so I can
scan individual files. Or this something I have to do? My
anti-virus programs are there and it would really be
convenient if Spyware was there, too. (=

Yes, it would be nice to see a individual File and Folder scan on the
context menus.

Just a question of interest:

How did that file or folder of files get on your computer past the active
agents already running in MSAS that they would now need a specialized
right-click feature?

Not saying we don't need it, just not seeing the keen interest in it.

I have also been thinking of that, we cant compare spyware
with virus
and I cant see any benefits with a right click function.

So put all money in definitions and real bugs.

The clock is ticking against 12 April........
tick,tack........

Then we will have a outbreak with angry users.
So Beta 2 must be ready as soon as possible.

If MS feels that they have money for right klick and other
minor UI functions so do it after Beta 2

One use of such a feature:

You receive an email with an attachment. It is clearly suspicious. You run
it by virustotal, and get no hits. Now you KNOW you are on the leading
edge--either that or its a dud.

You want to let it sit for a bit of time, and re-try. For Virustotal, read
Microsoft Antispyware.

Basically, you have a suspicious object that you suspect just isn't covered
by definitions yet, and you want a way to test it every so often, as
definitions change, to see whether it is now covered.

This is stretching things a bit for this app, but it's a scenario I've used
such a feature in.

ohhh...I see. All our dl's are safe now because the agents
will catch all trojans, adware, etc., as soon as we dl it,
so there's no need to run a second scan.

If it can get past the current scan, it can hide from subsequent scans. How
on earth would you know what file to right click? If you recognise it now
to right click, why didn't you recognise it when you donwloaded it from web,
email, friends files?

I am not saying don't do it, just interested in why.

So, I guess its not really needed, since Spyware is more real time than
viruses.

Intially for most people it will be a static cleanup and any GUI technique
people are used to will be welcome - LeftClick, RightClick, keyboard
shortcuts, menus, and buttons, etc...

Afterward though, the primary focus should be realtime. These problems have
to be stopped before they get on the machine because once they are in, they
will kill protective software processes - the tougher viruses already do.
That's what the fireall is supposed to be - realtime. Do you get hacked and
then cleanup with a firewall program? No. Short of MS rewriting the OS so
that these rogue processes can never load, I want realtime policing of all
data - from Layer 2 to Layer 7. Of course, the police can always eventually
be spoofed or paid off.

Life is a contest - between programmers writing more idiot proof software
and the universe creating more idiots - so far the universe is winning.
