right click problem

I'm having quite an infuriating problem with my system, Pentium IV 1.5 Ghz
running
256 meg ram

on my desktop running win XP Pro SP1 and all the updates whenever I right
click on a folder or file in explorer it takes an age, ie 20 or 30 seconds
for the right click menu to appear. Sometimes it does not appear. If I right
click from another machine on my network it does the same.

I've googled but not found anything relevant

any help or pointers really appreciated

tried that, downloaded patch but its still there, very very slooooow
