Had a trojan.somethingVerify that redirected the start
page, got rid of that, got rid of any viruses, ran the
spybot checker and got rid of that stuff too...

Now [only in IE 6.0] if you go to a link and right click -
select "open in new window", the browser freezes for about
60 secs., and the window never opens.

I have reinstalled the OS on top of itself, reinstalled XP
SP1, reinstalled IE 6.0 SP1...nothing works to fix this...

Help me Bill...you made the hole for this to happen...help
me fix it....

Hello Having simular probulum. The ability to open a new
window is not working. The frame opens but never displays
any content. I am looking for any help also . Have
done simular things like you but not getting any better.

Even thought it might have somthing to do with a popup
blocker but think i don't have any runing . Is there
some way to check ?????
Never did receive a trojan thingy like you.

Looking for help also Mark

Same thing happened to me ... Got to do with IE 6 ...
This one sucks !!! Also if you open IE & look for the
version it gives error "84" & Cipher strength shows 0

Moved to Netscape 7.1 works great !!!

Tried to go back to IE 5.5 but MS has support only for ME
not for W2k

SYMPTOMS
When you click a hyperlink in an e-mail message or on a
Web page, or right-click a hyperlink on a Web page and
then click Open in New Window, you may experience one or
more of the following symptoms:
Nothing happens.
The new window may be blank.
You may receive a scripting error message.
When you use the Print command or the Print Preview
command in Internet Explorer, nothing may happen.

When you try to connect to Web folders, you may receive
the following error message:

The current operation could not be completed because an
unexpected error has occurred.
CAUSE
This behavior may occur for any of the following reasons:
The (Default) value setting in one or more of the
following registry keys points to an incorrect location
for the Urlmon.dll file:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{79eac9e0-baf9-11ce-8c82-
00aa004ba90b}\InprocServer32]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{79eac9f1-baf9-11ce-8c82-

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{79eac9f2-baf9-11ce-8c82-
00aa004ba90b}\InprocServer32]

This may occur if you install a customized version of
Internet Explorer that was created with the Internet
Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) version 5.01 Service
Pack 1 (SP1), 5.5 SP1, or 6.0.
The following registry key is missing or damaged:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-

One or more of the following files is missing, damaged,
or improperly registered:
Url.dll
Mshtml.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Shell32.dll
Shdocvw.dll
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem in Internet Explorer, follow
these steps:
Quit all programs that are running.
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll
succeeded" message, click OK.
If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2
through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3,
replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):
Shdocvw.dll
Msjava.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll
Shell32.dll (Windows XP and Windows 2000 only)
If the problem is still not resolved, verify that the
following registry values are present and correct:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-
000000000046}

YOU might be right about the java script problem. I have
this problem geting ( not being to open a new window in
the browser) worst and when I try to do windsow update it
keeps wanting to update micorsoft VM . every time, nYEt
when it tries to update itself it prdompt that there is
no VM installed.

These two sysmptoms may to me be releated. I gues the
best solutions is to go back to square one and reinstall
windows itself.Micorsoft is hard to get a decent answer
from.

Mark

I too am having the same problem. i have had it before and got rid of the
problem, but i can't remember what i did to fix it.
In addition to not working when i right click. if the link is supposed to
open in a new windows it does not, the window will open but display noting
in the window, no 404error, not even a not responding error.

Thanks to all in advance
Mark

the registration process for url.dll failed "entry point
could not be found"

There is a typo in that article which may have misled you.
The instructions in the resolution refer to urlmon.dll.
Unfortunately the earlier description refers to url.dll.
You can re-register urlmon.dll. You cannot register url.dll.

If you like you can add these instructions to the list:
regsvr32 /i browseui.dll
regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
regsvr32 mshtmled.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll

What that represents is the set of re-registrations which
FixIE.inf indicates would be done for Base.W2K.AddReg
which I assume is the set closest to what might be done for XP
(e.g. if that OS supported an IE Repair.)

N.B. that neither mshtmled.dll nor actxprxy.dll have an entry point
called DllInstall and hence the /i option can not be used for them.

Neither msjava.dll nor shell32.dll are referred to by FixIE.inf.

The article is further deficient IMO because although it is supposedly
meant for XP users too it doesn't explain what they should do if they
reach the point where it says:
<quote>
If the problem is still not resolved, reinstall Internet Explorer.
If you are using the version of Internet Explorer that is included
with your operating system, reinstall or repair your operating system.
</quote>

One might guess that this means to try

<title>KB318378 - How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP</title>

or

<title>KB315341 - How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP</title>

If you have XPsp1 I think it might be simpler to try uninstalling it first.
That would back you out to IE6 (and presumably also back out all your
preSP2 fixes.) All of the re-registrations necessary to do that might
be enough of a fix; so all you would have to do is re-visit Windows Update
and get all of those updates again.
