Right click on desktop causes 2 min hang

Hi folks:

I was working on a friend's machine and have come upon a problem I
can't solve. Whenever you right click on the desktop the machine
hangs for about 2 minutes and then frees up. I've seen lots of posts
about WinXP hanging when you right click on a desktop icon, but in my
case right clicking on the icons is just fine, but right clicking on
the desktop itself causes this hang. By using taskmgr I can see that
explorer.exe is using 100 percent of the CPU during the time it's
hung. If I use taskmgr to terminate explorer, and then restart it
manually from taskmgr, I can break the hang without waiting for the
two minutes.

I ran a full virus scan and applied all the patches from windows
update, but the problem persists. I'd seen a couple of posts about a
particular security update causing a hang when right clicking desktop
icons, but this problem occurs when right clicking the desktop proper,
not the icons, and the problem was there before any patches were
applied. Given the number of patches that were applied, including
SP1, I don't believe this machine had any fixes beyond the base WinXP
when I started working on it.

Suggestions welcome.

run chkdsk /f and also review any messages in
the event viewer (eventvwr.msc from the RUN box)
