Right Click not working in XP

When using Right Click on the desktop or in windows explorer a blank
pop up appears. If I move over to it then I can see the itmes shown
when I move the mouse up and down above the blank area. It is almost
as if it is transparent because where there is a divider in grey
between the various sections on the pop up, I can see the text (or
whatever) in the window underneath. On the desktop for example, if I
click an icon the blank box appears and when I move up and down the
text is shown but I can see bits of my desktop as if transparent.
Any ideas please ?
It also happens in other applications (not firefox bit it does on right
clicking a link in IE)

Problems with the right-click context menu are most often caused by
third-party software inserting their own entries into it.

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers -

I have looked at the context menu and disabled but no joy. I was
wondering if anyone else had the problem. Plenty of memory etc but I
can understand why that suggestion was made.
If anyone has seen this before, specifically, I'd appreciate a comment.
I have run virus checks, registry cleansers etc.

This might help:

Transparent drop-down Menu and disappearing menu text:

That is exactly waht I needed - it described the problem perfectly -
like an idiot though I did a lot of things at once without doinf it
step by step. It is all vleared but I didn't actually get the borrom of
why it happened. In teresting to see that it is a known issue though !
Thanks again
