Diddy Kong

All of a sudden, or so it seems, whenever I right-click something it takes a
long time (30 seconds) for the menu to pop up. It only does it the first
time I right-click something, after that the menu pops up right away. It
does this on anything that I right-click. Once I restart the computer, it
starts all over again.

Any ideas???

Thank you.

There is a serious new problem with Norton Antivirus (NAV) as of the
latest virus definition update... slow-response to right-clicking
files is one symptom... slow opening of MS Word and Excel (if NAV's
office Plugin is enabled) is another...

Waiting for Symantec to acknowledge and fix...

Right-click on MY COMPUTER and select:
Properties > Advanced > Performance Settings
and uncheck "Show Shadows under Menus"
and click APPLY.

I can confirm this. I just uninstalled Norton Internet Security. The problem
disappeared. I reinstalled the problem's back. Let's hope they come up with
a fix quickly.

Same thing here. It started on all 3 of my home computers at about the
same time. If you disable the office plug-in, excel still takes a lot
longer to start up, but the 'requesting virus scan' that usually
appears in the excel status bar doesn't appear and the sheet opens
faster. With the plugin enabled, it takes 20-30 seconds to open the
xls file once excel starts up. I'm also getting this on word documents
as well.
Executable programs are also taking longer to open, 2-3 seconds
instead of almost instantly and if you right click on a file it takes
about 20 seconds for the menu to show up.

Tested and works on all 3 computers:
Found a fix that seems to work...Right click on IE and go to
properties. Click on the advanced tab and scroll down to the bottom.
Under the Security heading, uncheck 'Check for publisher certificate
revocation' and reboot. MS Office docs/xls sheets open fast, right
clicking is zippy and NAV opens and starts quickly now. The problems
appears to be that all the NAV files are signed with a certificate
that expired 1/7/2004. Every time it tries to use a file, it's going
out to verisign to see if it's really expired and if there's a new
certificate available.

Try this as a fix for now:

1. in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared, rename the
CommonClient.dat to something else.
2. rename CommonClient_old.dat to CommonClient.dat
3. insert the following host entries:
127.0.0.1 sitefinder-idn.verisign.com
127.0.0.1 crl.verisign.com

Do a manual update on NAV and you should be fine. Supposedly the 01/08 update
fixes things

I just wanted to let you all know that this is the reason I come home from
work and make this place my first stop in the world of the internet. I have
learned so much by reading all you suggestions. Like this problem for

Keep up the good work and thank you all for keeping my pc in FANTASTIC
shape.
