Right Click Hangs

Last week I reinstalled XP Home version in my Compaq 6000. I have 512MB ram and 2-120GB drives. 2.5GHz. With nothing running and CPU usage at zero, my system hangs when I right click My Computer, a drive icon or my trash. Not when I right click my desktop. To my knowledge I can't access Skan Disk if I can't right click the drive icon. Help Please.
 
Thanks for the reply, but that doesn't work. When I right click on C drive to get properties, it hangs. Any other idea on how to get scan disk without a right click?
 
You can go to start..run and type in chkdsk /r. Make sure to have the space
between the slash and the k.
