ridicously high security setting affects everyth. by disabling Act

Hi,

I've got a strange problem. For some reason (I didn't update or install
anything) my Internet security settings are redicously high, in the
description field it just says "blank" and it doesn't give me any options at
all anymore. If I turn down the switch, next time I have a look at these
settings they're back to strange again.

Because I've got WinME those security settings affect the display of folders
and in fact my whole system. Whenever I want to open a folder I get a message
stating that my security settings are too high and prevent ActiveX-thingybobs
to be run (sorry, I'm translating this from German I don't know the
"official" text). Instead I get to see %THISDIRNAME% %THISDIRPATH%.
Furthermore, I cannot switch off Windows using web-style folders instead of
normal ones (again, everytime I change the settings it just goes back to
strange again).

I've done many virus scans with different engines and the friendly people
from a German anti-trojan board can't think of anything we haven't tried.
Nothing has turned up.

Do you know how I could change those settings in the registry, or what else
I could do?

Thank you very much indeed, I appreciate your time,
Johannes.

Hi Johannes,
Try this on the Previcy Tab Set your Selector to Medium and the POP Up
blocker to Medium also, then on the Programs Tab press the Button Labled
Reset Web Settings and Clear your Caches and Files/Cookies from the General
Tab.
Close the IE Properties and Reboot the Computer then try to Go to Microsoft
Website and Get the Latest update.
Hope this helps
Regards
nass

Hi nass, thanks for helping.

I'm afraid all the buttons go back to their strange settings once I've
clicked OK, so does the privacy tab where it keeps going back to user-defined.

Have you got another idea what I could do?

Thanks a lot,
Johannes.

Hi Johannes,
Try this; Open command RUN and the Text Box type the follwoing;
regsvr32 Softpub.dll
regsvr32 Wintrust.dll
regsvr32 Initpki.dll
regsvr32 Dssenh.dll
regsvr32 Rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 Gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 Sccbase.dll
regsvr32 Slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 Cryptdlg.dll
Then Reboot and see if it helps.
If no joy Reinstall IE.
Good luck
nass

I'm afraid the computer keeps on telling me that it cannot find a command or
or file with this name. Do you have any other suggestions than installing IE
again? I can only use floppy disks and that would be quite a task to install
it from floppy again...

If anyone wants to see a screenshot of my problem, have a look here

Thanks, nass, though, I appreciate your time,
Johannes.

Hi,
What third-party security programs are you running? Some of them modify and
lock security settings for IE.

Hi Don,

there's only AntiVir Antivirus software (www.free.av.de, very very common in
Germany and I have it on a couple of other computers and never had a problem
at all). I fact, just to see what's causing the switch back to strange I had
Spybot Search & Destroy's Tea Timer installed and running fo a short while. I
figured it should ask me to confirm before my IE settings are being changed.
Then I went into the IE options security tab and changed them to medium,
clicked OK, I think Tea Timer did produce a pop-up, but actually it was more
a cock-up because the buttons where messed up and didn't show "accept" or
"decline". When I had figured out what is what I noticed, that Tea Timer
didn't seem to have any influence whether or not that setting goes back to
strange or not. I deinstalled it swiftly...

Apart from those, none.

Thanks for helping, Don,
Johannes.

Be more specific? Which command? regsvr32.exe?

In addition to the other regsvr32.exe commands you were given
I would try:

regsvr32.exe /n /i inetcpl.cpl

I can only use floppy disks and that would be quite a task to install
it from floppy again...

Explain that. No CD drive? No Inernet connection? No hard disk space?

Check to see if your View in that folder is "View as web page"
and change it to something else if so.

Hi,
[Grasping at straws]
With IE6 on WinME, do you have a "repair" option in Add/remove programs> IE?

Or try IEFix from http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

Or (regedit) what's the value of the Flags DWORD Value in this key?
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion \Internet
Settings \Zones\3]
It should (probably) be 1 (one.)

Can you set the Internet Zone (or others) to "Default?"

Hi,

thanks for grasping. At first I thought you had caught a rather save and
stable hook, but I'm afraid it didn't continue that well. I have tried that
program. Although it says its job's completed the problems remain. When I
checked the Add/Repair function (IE 6 with SP1) it tells me "IE cannot be
repaired because of following errors: when creating
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\browseui.dll an error occured", and the message continues
with similar notes for thumbvw.dll and wininet.dll and some others but the
message box isn't that big... I've got the logfile here (
http://www.trojaner-board.de/showpost.php?p=214578&postcount=21 ) if you want
to have a look at it. Anyway, I did reinstall IE already to get those entries
right. Oh, and setting zones is impossible because the tab is blank.

When I open regedit and click on one of the two HKEY_CURRENT_USER or
HKEY_USERS I get a message that this key cannot be opened. Now, that's strage
especially considering that I can access the other HKEYs without any problems.

Actually, there are a few hints that the profiles are damaged, but creating
new ones doesn't help.

Do you know what's happened?

Thanks a lot,
Johannes.

Hi,
It might be time to reinstall WinME and IE5.5. Then update back to IE6. See
the excellent instructions at http://www.crashfixpc.be/reinME.htm

To repeat important points...
You will *probably* not lose data, but backup anything important. Don't
forget the Outlook Express data store.
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/backup/

Uninstall IE6 and Windows Media Player 9.
