Greetings,

This warning (Warning :There is less than 6% available RIDs in the current
pool) concerns me...

Results of dcdiag /test:ridmanager /v:

Starting test: RidManager
* Available RID Pool for the Domain is 8164 to 1073741823
* DC1.domain.com the RID Master
* DsBind with RID Master was successful
* rIDAllocationPool is 7664 to 8163
* rIDNextRID: 7138
* rIDPreviousAllocationPool is 6664 to 7163
* Warning :There is less than 6% available RIDs in the current pool
......................... DC1 passed test RidManager

The domain is fuctioning as expected - all of the DC's holding the FSMO
roles are accounted for and functioning properly. Is the an indication of a
problem? I thought when 50% of the RID Pool is consumed the RID Master will
request a new pool

I have run netdom /query fsmo and it completed w/o any problems or errors.

I have two sites each with 1 DC. DC1 holds all of the FSMO roles. Both
DC's are win2k SP4.

any advice is appreciated.

.
Have you run dcdaig on both of your DCs? Did you run
netdom on both of your DCs? Have you also tried using
REPLMON to verify that the DC that holds the FSMO Roles is
*available* and *reachable*?

Are you receiving the Event IDs as described in the MSKB
Article you mentioned?

Cary,

Thank you for your response -- comments in-line below:

Yes. The DC that holds the FSMO role returns these results:

Starting test: RidManager
* Available RID Pool for the Domain is 8164 to 1073741823
* DC1.domain.com is the RID Master
* DsBind with RID Master was successful
* rIDAllocationPool is 7664 to 8163
* rIDNextRID: 7139
* rIDPreviousAllocationPool is 6664 to 7163
* Warning :There is less than 5% available RIDs in the current pool
......................... DC1 passed test RidManager

The other DC in another site returns these results:

Starting test: RidManager
* Available RID Pool for the Domain is 8164 to 1073741823
* DC1.domain.com is the RID Master
* DsBind with RID Master was successful
* rIDAllocationPool is 7164 to 7663
* rIDNextRID: 7280
* rIDPreviousAllocationPool is 7164 to 7663
......................... DC2 passed test RidManager
Did you run netdom on both of your DCs?

Yes.

Results querying DC1:

netdom query fsmo /Server:DC1.domain.com

Schema owner DC1.domain.com
Domain role owner DC1.domain.com
PDC role DC1.domain.com
RID pool manager DC1.domain.com
Infrastructure owner DC1.domain.com
The command completed successfully.

Results querying DC2:

netdom query fsmo /Server:DC2.domain.com

Schema owner DC1.domain.com
Domain role owner DC1.domain.com
PDC role DC1.domain.com
RID pool manager DC1.domain.com
Infrastructure owner DC1.domain.com
The command completed successfully.

Have you also tried using REPLMON to verify that the DC that holds the FSMO Roles is
*available* and *reachable*?

Yes. I won't include the logs for sake of brevity.
Are you receiving the Event IDs as described in the MSKB
Article you mentioned?

I am not receiving any Event ID's that are mentioned in that article nor any
that would indicate that there is a problem.

Thanks,

john

To correct the problem requires another domain controller. Seize
the RID master role to the other domain controller and then reboot
the problem DC. Upon reboot it will get a new RID pool.

Thank you to Tom and Cary for responding to my post.

The problem (if we could call it that) has been solved by doing the
following:

I saw that the current rIDPreviousAllocationPool was 6664 to 7163 and the
rIDNextRID was 7138 so I decided to create about 25 more objects until the
current pool was used up (BTW, I had warning messages from dcdiag
/test:ridmanager /v indicating that the pool was 5%, 4%, 3% and so on until
0% left...). And then....the RID Master created a new pool which is now
7664 to 8163. No idea why it waited that long to create a new pool
considering that it in SP4 (which should create/or add to the new pool when
it is 50% depleted).

Finally, no offense to Tom but I think his suggestion was a bit extreme
considering I was not experiencing any abnormalities or Warning/Error Event
ID's.

No offense taken. What we usually see every day are the extreme
cases so some of the answers we give may seem like that. I'm glad
everything worked out.

I know this is a few years late to answer this question, but today the same happened to me in a lab enviroment. I had to use up all the RIDs in the master, so the master would renew its RIDs.

Greetings.
