Hi,

You were kind enough to answer my question re: my name coming up on the log
in screen after I did some Windows upgrades. You are absolutely correct,
one of the updates was .net framework. (which happens to be one of the two
I couldn't find under programs)

Anyway I tried to follow your advice on how to fix it and I somehow screwed
it up even worse......to the point where I froze up my computer and had to
do an illegal shutdown.

I got to userpasswords2 without any problem. But when it asked me for my
user name I wasn't sure what to put in. It already had Administrator in
there so I left it and put in the password I usually use. Was I suppose to
even put in a password seeing as I want to skip that step in the log in
process? When I logged out to see how it worked, it came back up with "The
system could not log you on, make sure your user name and domain are
correct" but I was able to just click OK and it took me to the split page
with my name on it which I had to click on to get to my desktop. So then I
went in and clicked on HP Authorized Customer (see how dumb I am) and I got
the same message. OK, now I put in my name like it shows on the log in
screen and password again. When I did a shutdown and came back in, it
looked like an error message flashed for just a split second but then the
page where it says Windows is connecting (or checking settings?) came on
(I'm sorry I know that isn't quite right but it is something like that).
However, nothing happened; that page just stayed there and I wasn't able to
do anything else. I gave it about 4 minutes and then did an illegal
shutdown - something I have never had to do before since I installed XP.
Then about 15 minutes later I came back and miracle of miracles my computer
was back on. The split log-on screen was back and so were several error
message windows over the top of it such as there already is another user
with the same name, incorrect user name and maybe something else. I just
closed the boxes and clicked on my name to get back in.

What did I do wrong? How can I fix this?

Also, I want to apologize for my remark about not getting help from the
Microsoft or HP personnel. I just meant when I've tried using the support
on their sites, I don't get as quick or as accurate responses as I do from
this Microsoft site. Probably because they are completely baffled by me.

So if you can see it in your heart to help get me out of this mess, I would
greatly appreciate it.

There are 3 users, me, guest which shows account is off and the third is
ASP.Net Machine A. That one says limited account, password protected. What
in the heck is that?
Also, I am still getting the message "a duplicate name exists on the
network" everytime I turn on the computer.

Hi,

The last one is the result of installing the .net framework update - you can
safely delete it.

OK, I deleted that but I am still getting that error message that a
duplicate name exists on the network. The only difference is instead of
getting it right before I log on, it has now moved to my systems tray and is
labeled "Windows System Error" then that same message. Do you know how I
can get rid of that?

Thanks for all your help you have been giving me.

Sandee

Hi Sandee,

That message mean's that the computer detects another machine on the same
network using the same name as it is. You need to change one of them.
Control Panel/System/Computer Name, click "change".

Hi Rick,
I'm glad you are still helping me. I promise, once you get me through this
I won't mess around and screw up my computer for a long time. Before I
follow your latest advice (which has been right on so far) I have a question
or two. This whole "duplicate name" message only started coming up after I
went into Start, Run, control userpasswords2 and tried to make my computer
stop making me click on my name upon start up. The only thing was, I chose
the wrong user name. Knowing this, do you still think I should go into
Control Panel/System/Computer Name and change it? When I went in there, it
only shows one computer name which is HP something or other. How did I get
a duplicate name? It has to be from something I screwed up when I went into
"control userpasswords2". I would just go in a do a system restore except I
don't think it would get rid of the error message and I would have to go
back about 2 weeks which is when I installed the .net framework thing which
is causing all my problems. I don't want to do that because just last week
I switched from Dial up to DSL and I'm afraid I'll screw up all the
settings. I don't mind that I have to click on my name to get to the
desktop I just want to get the error message to go away. Is your advice the
same? Thank you very much for the patience and prompt attention you have
been giving me.

Sandee

With all my rambling trying to give you a good picture of what the problem
is, I forgot to mention I'm not on a network and this is my only computer.

Hi Sandee,

Is this the only pc on your dsl connection? Or are others in the household
networked in as well? There should not be any issues with changing the pc's
name, you should be safe to proceed.
