When turning my pc on and clicking on an icon, the screen turns black and says "no RGB input". What does that mean and how can I fix the problem?

Can you give us some more information about your pc. RGB is something to do with the graphics side of things.

Have you installed anything new, moved the pc or had the case off it?

Check the monitor cable is connected properly?

Is the graphics card seated properly in the graphics slot?

Can you see things on the monitor as soon as you turn the PC on, and you only get this error when clicking on an icon on your desktop?

Normally this error would mean that your monitor isn't physically connected to the graphics card (i.e. the cable is loose/fallen out) - however it wouldn't happen just because you clicked on an icon.

Can you explain a bit more about the problem and we'll try to help :)

What Icon do you click ?

Possibilities include....
Application is set to run at a resolution higher than your hardware can support.
Application uses directx translation drivers which are corrupt or not unloaded from system (occures rarely when a game crashes out)... sometimes these become the resident drivers for the o/s afterwards.

Some monitors will display a corrupt image... others will report no signal/no RGB input.

Before everyone jumps the gun. Like Ian says just chk your cable is connected at both end first mate please ;)

I jumped no gun.... :p
I just followed what he said and advised the possibilities....
He must have an output otherwise he wouldn't be able to click on an icon.
Only possible connection issue I can think of is that the mouse cable is tangled around the monitor cable. Other than that it's most likely a s/w setting for the application he clicks on.

I would think presuming its the fault of a mouse cable was again jumping the gun. There are dozens of possiblilities your's included why the problem exists. We need to start with basics first dont you agree? ;)

We may never know until he/she gets back in touch with us

Maybe just a faulty graphics card..Start by removing it and see what happens..Sometimes the simplest answers are the right answers..

Yeah I suppose your right.... but then again I'm used to the technical stuff.
The question suggests that this happens repeatedly. Ergo, it's not a cable issue unless something moves the cable.... from what was posted the most obvious being the mouse cable.
The system boots into the o/s and upon launch of an application the screen loses signal.
Given, true, it could be a faulty graphics card, however, usually a fault of that kind shows it's effects during boot.
Given the screen turns blank during launch of an application, the most common reason is a graphics setting that the system can't cope with. This is common with ATI cards and certain games.

But hey, I'm only a over qualified IT Admin who has a work record of over 11 years, currently finishing a MCIT to add to the list.

Sorry about the rant but it's been a hard day. Ian asked for extra info due to the question lacking it. I went with what I read. I don't run threw a step-by-step guide unless all else fails... besides I had this issue myself about 2 years ago... EVE had an issue with certain ATI cards being that a refresh command was invalidly called causing the loses of signal to the monitor. (Happened to alot of games tbh).
