When I start the PC, WinXP begins loading then goes to Blue Critical error
message about a physical memory dump then freezes. It will start in Safe Mode
sometimes, and has started in normall a couple times after no modifications.
It is a Dell so I know I won't get any help from them. Can anyone help me
please!!!!!!!!!!$20 Reward!!!!!!!!!

Just call Dell. If it is under warranty - they certainly will assist you.

If it is not under warranty - it does sound like a hardware error - or
likely initially caused by a hardware error.

Turn off the computer, turn it on and press F12 to choose where to boot from
(as soon as you turn it on, start tapping F12 once per second to get a
menu) - boot from the Diagnostics Partition and run a full diagnostics on it
to test the hardware.

We would need to know the 'exact' err msg on the screen

Allmost certainly a hardware problem.
You can try seagate seatools to test your hd & www.memtest.org to test your
memory

Boot to "Utility Partition"...

The person downloaded some anti-virus that was probably infected, because it
started after she removed the program. On the rare occasion when it does
start in normal mode I get tons of errors saying DLL files are missing or
corrupt. When I start it in safe mode with networking, I am able to go online
and everything. However it won't let me install AVG antivirus so I can see if
it is indeed a virus problem.

Also the warranty is up, and I have an HP while the broken computer is a
dell. Can I make recovery disks from Winxp for HP and use them for WinXP for
Dell?

List the .dll's mentioned in the error messages the next time you try
normal mode.

Avast! (and probably every other av software) has a utility to check for
malware without an install of their software. Get it here:

No.

I think it may be a software problem due to it running in safe mode, but not
normal mode. I've gone through the list of startup programs and changed it so
only the necessities start and no change.

The DLL's off the top of my head were; Kernal32.dll, hlink.dll, and something
like oledlg.dll.

I am prepared to wipe the hard drive if needed, but Dell does not provide a
system restore and are nazi's about windows replacement anyways, not to
mention it's not under warranty. Is there anyway to get a replacement for
WinXP without having to repurchase it? Email me at (e-mail address removed)

Usually that does point to a driver issue - remove all hardware in Device
Manage in safe mode and reboot.
(Or at least the hdd controller, the video and the network...)

If you know what was done right before it got messed up - uninstall just
that.

Dell's also - depending on the purchase made - could have a restoration
partition.

Also - what is it - you originally said " It will start in Safe Mode
sometimes "...?
Sometimes is a large jump from always.

!!!!! funny & cheap !!!!!!

The best thing to do to help us fix this problem is to write down everything
in the blue screen especially all the files listed and the stop error
messages (ie the 0x numbers). From there you can usually find the issue
thats causing the blue screen and possibly fix the issue as well.

To clarify, sometimes Safe Mode freezes up, and won't even respond to
restart. I'm positive this problem arose from her DLing some untrusted
antivirus, most likely a pop up banner. I do believe this problem could be
fixed with the original XP home disk, but it is lost. Thank you all for the
great responses!

If you have neither Dell restore cd's or a Dell restore partition, you need
access to an OEM cd of the same win version (Home/Pro) I dont know whether a
generic OEM cd will be ok on your sys - someone here is bound to know

PS I now recollect I recovered a Dell sys with a generic Dell OEM cd, same
version, using the key that was on the label on the tower.
My local PC shop gave me the cd - gratis

Have you recently loaded McAfee Security Center. I have a Dell and when I
loaded McAfee I had the same problem. Whenever I tried to open Internet
Explorer the computer went to a blue screen and physical memory dump. I have
spent hours on the phone with Dell, Comcast, and McAfee. No one has been
able to solve this. If you uninstall McAfee the computer will run. Anyway
that's my experience.
