Reviving HP 45 ink cartridge

I have a recurring problem with the HP 45 blank ink cartridge when used
with a Photosmart 1218 printer. I don't use this printer very much,
with the result that I rarely need to change the cartridge, especially
the black ink cartridge. I have several times found that the black ink
cartridge stops working, even though it is still more than half full.
I'm guessing that something is drying or clogging.

Same failure has occurred with both an original HP cartridge and a
remanufactured cartridge.

With my infrequent use, the cartridge may be beyond its warranty
expiration date by the time it fails.

Is there any effective way to fix a cartridge with this problem?

Thanks.

I sometimes have a problem with these carts after refilling. If cleaning
doesn't work. Try putting the cart nozzels down into a plastic bag and swing
it round so that centrifugal force primes it.

Just be careful. I had one tear through the bag and go flying across the
kitchen. Fortunately, the ink that splattered out on impact was on an
easily cleaned surface. I'd hate to think what would have happend if it
had splattered on the livingroom carpet.
