Revise General Settings Window

First impressions are important. With any type of anti-spware program, I am
anxious to install the program and run a complete spyware scan to see if this
program catches anything more than the five (yes, I am paranoid) programs I
currently use. At first the general settings window looks clean and precise;
however, after reading some of the items, I was somewhat reluctant to run a
scan. My suggestions are strictly for clarity and by no means reflect the
the actual wording Microsoft should adopt assuming some of my suggestions are
used.

Add a line to reflect what happens when a spyware scan is missed. Under
Default actions the line "Windows Defender will display the folllowing
actions by default for software with these alert levels:" should be
changed to something else - I am not really sure what you're trying to
convey. It might just be better to leave the line out. Possibly change
Signature default to Let Windows decide or at least put a link to the Help
that describes alert levels and software definitions (signatures). Add to
the note under alert levels where it talks about removal of items that the
items are still saved (quarantine) - this was the line that made me
uncomfortable about running a scan.

The people participating in this beta are
knowledgeable and sophisticated and may not have any problems with it as is.
But the ultimate audience of Windows Defender will probably be broader and
need as much simplicity and clarity as possible.

I made a technical mistake, so I am revising part of what I said.
Apparently, WD when doing a "Remove" does just that and only that - i.e., no
quarantine. So instead of saying it does a quarantine, say that it doesn't
as a warning. Also, on the emotional aspects of finding this out through
testing (no thanks to the WD Help), you people must be fricken nuts to not
provide a quarantine option. I can just imagine when people check that box
that says to perform the indicated actions and WD decides to remove (with no
quarantine) a program that shouldn't be removed. I'm sure the customer is
going to look elsewhere for a different software product.

I agree with you.

We've got a number of bugs here that we're working on for RTM. A help link
should be there, I think, so I've opened a bug there. We are working on
help that will explain alert levels and actions in detail. We've actually
changed the text for default actions, but it's honestly still not as helpful
as it should be, I opened a bug there, too.

Finally, the big one - the quarantine option should be there for RTM - we've
got some technical issues to work though first.

Thanks for the feedback, and for trying Windows Defender,
Joe
