Reversing XP upgrade

I have friends whose grandson installed an XP Pro upgrade
on their Windows ME computer. The computer now has a
number of problems, including crashes. They would like to
reverse the upgrade. It was my understanding that such
upgrades could be reversed, but I can't find instructions
anywhere. Does anyone know where Microsoft (or, failing
that, anyone else) has instructions? Has anyone tried to
do this?

Greetings --

If you performed an upgrade from Win98/Me, elected to backup the
old system files, and didn't convert the partition to NTFS, then all
you need do is boot into Safe Mode and Start > Control Panel >
Add/Remove Programs. All of these conditions _must_ be met for the
uninstall option to be available.
