I'm running FP 2002 on a server with extensions. My question is, what (if
any) are the risks of opening the site live, dragging from the server and
dropping to the local HDD? I ask because I tried doing this
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892747/en-us and I still received the error
msg. "You specified identical destination file names..." I also looked at
this, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905426/en-us but I'm not exactly sure
of what it means. Again, I get the above error msg. Does it mean to change
the name of the file on the server? I'm d/l ing to an empty directory...
Any help would be very much appreciated, as I try and find my way around FP.
Mike

You have to publish between location. The error message indicates that you have two file with the
same name but not the same case (such as, index.htm and Index.htm) on the live/remote site which
running Unix/Linux, where as Windows considers index.htm and Index.htm as one and the same file.

First create an empty website on your computer with FP.

Then open the remote site with FP, and publish it BACK to that empty site on
your computer.

The msg might say that, however, the web I just tried to publish to is empty.
I understand the different naming conventions, but I'm just not clear on why
I should change the names of the files on the server (if that's what your
supposed to do) if I'm publishing to an empty web?
Thanks,
Mike

Your problem is probably because your online hosted server is Case sensitive and allows 2 similar files w/ different Case to exist
as in: Index.htm and index.htm
- but your Windows PC will not allow that
Look to similar files w/ different Case and delete or rename them

The server is where the duplicate file names are.
If, on the server, you have files named index.htm and Index.htm - Unix
servers regard these as different files, since Unix is CaSe sensitive.
However, Windows is not CaSe sensitive, so *if* FP allowed the files
to be published to your Windows PC, (empty web or not) those two files
would overwrite each other. TFP is clever enough to spot this, and
prevents the download. It is up to you to rename one of the
"duplicates" on the server before you overwrite them.

I'm slow, but I get it now! But I'm still curious. Is there any harm,
advantage/disadvantage etc, in dragging the files from a live FP session to
the local hdd? Thank you all very much for the help. Your patients and
assistance is very much appreciated!

Dragging files from an open FP web to Windows explorer (or the
desktop) is the equivalent of File->Export.
Useful if you want some files, such as databases or form results
files, on your desktop for processing.

If you are moving the files from one web to another, you can either
Publish the web (preferred), Publish selected files (by selecting some
files and right clicking on one and choosing that option), or drag and
drop from one web to another. BUT, do not drag from a web and drop
onto your web folder on your hard disc (outside of FrontPage) and
expect FrontPage to acknowledge it is there.
Also, in moving files from one web to another within FP, any FrontPage
components will be automatically changed so that they will function as
expected in the receiving web - Unix servers require different
settings to Windows servers, and Disc based webs are different again.
These changes do not happen when exporting.

I *always* publish any pages that have FrontPage webbotts in them,
this ensures the extensions change any settings that need to be
changed.
