I have just created a reverse lookup zone for one of my
subnets. Problem is, a host record is only created in that
zone when you add a host to the regular zone, and check
the box to "create associated ptr record"

What about all the hosts that I already have populated in
my regular zone. How can I get them to create themselves
an associated ptr record without removing and readding
them by hand?

Did you allow dynamic updates on the zone?

Yes, "Only Secure"
Only Secure updates requires that the machines must have permissions to
update the zone check that ACL list on the zone and try ipconfig
/registerdns or restart the machine.
