Free Software For DOS

Yes many goodies there. Notice you can download a zipped copy of the
all the html pages <http://members.cox.net/dos/fs_fdh.zip> (500K)
for offline viewing. File it under Worth Keeping!

People should observe the site is no longer regularly maintained,
so expect some broken links etc.
(about status - see under updates and news on the front page
<http://members.cox.net/dos/softlib1.htm#indices>). If broken links
I suggest a search on www.google.com on the software name and/or
author name.

Also check the more current "Interesting DOS programs" at
<http://www.opus.co.tt/dave/>.

Another nice (but not so current) page is
"DOS Utilities and Comments"
<http://www.oregonfast.net/steen/msdos.htm>

And "Doctor DOS Betamax"
<http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ak621/DOS/DOS-Head.html>
with DOS and batch tips - as well as many links on
<http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ak621/DOS/Websites.html>

Also have a look at "The Oldskool PC" <http://www.oldskool.org/>
site, with among other things some helpful guides, like
"Getting Old Software Running on Newer PCs"
A use for that old 486 in the atic afteral... ;-)

site worth browsing <http://www.computercraft.com/>

All the best,

I've always been a fan of the VDE text editor. It's a gem.

I was a big Q-Edit fan. Alright, alright, it's not Freeware. :)

Thanks, I have a 486 and plan to work only in DOS on it.

I have a 1992 Dell 386 that I use for DOS only. Quietest cumputer in the
house. Here's a link for some interesting and hard to get stuff.

Thanks, dszady, I forgot all I used to know in 1987 about DOS and have
to learn it again. My goal is to play old games on the DOS computer.

A very noble goal, indeed!

Particularly as those old sports and aircraft games require lots of
tricks regarding memory allocation, config settings, etc. And my old
machine is not a gamer machine.

under updates and news 2002-03-10:
"These html pages are now being distributed under the CDL (Common
Documentation License). "
See above page for full text.

Result: Another version of the site have surfaced, with all of the
original contents, plus new layout (colors) and some additions
and updates: Here, via this page:
<http://short.stop.home.att.net/index.htm>

Just found this site - I can not say how much is
added compared to the original. Also check the other pages on that
site, like the VDE page - with additional DOS stuff
(http://home.att.net/~short.stop/vde.htm#moredos) and links etc.
