Is there any way to retrieve permanently deleted messages
from Outlook 2002? I made a big mistake... Thanks.

I can't guarantee you anything but there is a method that could restore
several up to all messages as long as you haven't compressed your pst-file
yet. Follow the "How To" on my site www.sparnaaij.net "Restore deleted items
from an Outlook pst" in the "How To" section.

Please post back your findings! Good luck!

In an Exchange environment, you may be able to go into your deleted items
folder and choose "recover deleted items" from the tools menu, if you
Exchange Admin has setup the server to hold on to deleted messages for n
days.

I think I have a way!

Go to www.whitecanyon.com. There you can get "Secureclean." I can't
remember if it was a free trial download, or if I had to buy it.

Once installed, you can scan you drive for, among other things, "deleted
emails."

Upon reading your post, I tried scanning my drive, and was able to find an
email that I just from my Outlook permanently.

I think you'd better do it quickly, because the more you use your computer,
the more likely that the deleted email will be overwritten, and lost
forever. But if you do this right away, you stand a good chance of
recovering it. (If recovering the deleted email is important enough to you,
STOP using the computer for anything else, because the more you use it, the
less likely Secureclean will be able to recover it.)

Let me know how you make out!

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your suggestion - unfortunately it didn't
work. The deleted emails all said 'text lost'. Still,
sureclean looks like a good program...

I am not sure what you mean about an Exchange
environment. This is a home computer runing win 2000.
Can you give me any more clues?

Thanks!

I am not sure if I followed the directions correctly - but
so far I have not got it to work.

I used ultra edit but am not 100% sure what you meant
about 'character 7 to 13'. (here is what it looked like:
!BDNU@#`SM...... I went from the # sign over to the dots
counting the spaces and yes, the numbers on the left all
changed to 20)I saved the file as another name, ran
scanpst.exe opened Outlook and then the file, but I didn't
find any of the missing emails. Did I do it correctly?

thanks.

Yes, you did do it correctly. Unfortunately results cannot be guaranteed (as
with most undelete functionality). It does work when the pst-file hasn't
been used directly after deletion of the mails (close Outlook and
immediately start this procedure). Most of the time this isn't the case and
when you start it at a later time results may vary. Just recently someone
recovered mails up to March but never recovered other more recent mails. You
can try it again with the "recovered" pst-file and see if it finds anything.
Also you can try it again and "space" more characters or start from a
different character depending on how much time you want to spend to it
before giving up :-S. Still the best way to prevent this is to back-up your
pst-file regular. I've placed a link to the MS Outlook pst back-up add-in on
my site in the download section. There is also a script I wrote which
enables you to schedule your back-ups at a specific time.

Good luck!
