Hi,

This question involves both network and Exchange. So please bear with me.

I am not well verse on both VPN and Exchange. This is the scenario.

We have 2 different networks, geographically they are far apart. Lets call
them Town A and Town B. The network in Town A does not have internet access.
However, port 25 is open for SMTP. Town B has internet access and also has
an Exchange server. The objective is to let the clients in Town A to be able
to retrieve mails (either POP or SMTP) from the Exchange server in Town B.
The problem is I do not know how to do it.

However, I have a thinking is that if I can enable internet access in Town
A, I can create a VPN connection to Town B and start retrieving mails from
there. Is this workable?

Secondly, if I can retrieve mails via POP, can I do away with the VPN stuff
and just enable Internet access in Town A?

In short, I hope I can retrieve mails without enabling internet access in
Town A.

Can anyone suggest?

Thanks in advance. :)

Is there a corporate connection between town A and B? If so you can
use that connection and run any mail client over it without the need
for VPN.
If town A needs to get more than mail from town B then a VPN is an
ideal solution. You use an Internet connection in town A to connect to
town B. There are several small scale hardware based VPN solutions so
that the PCs don't need any configuration.
If you just want email then a VPN isn't strictly necessary (although
still a good idea) You can configure the mail server to respond to
IMAP/POP/HTTP, whichever you need/want. Best to do this over SSL by
getting a certificate from Thwaite or BT etc. etc.
Obviously you'll need an Internet Connection from A or a corporate
link between A and B. The decision is yours and any further advice
would be based on the outcome of that debate.
