Some spyware has reset IE6 and all my favourites (hundreds of them!) have
gone. Is there any way of retrieving them? Thanks. A

Having now done a GG search, I see I might be out of luck. :(
But please confirm this or otherwise. Thanks.

If they are gone gone gone, may I be allowed to respectfully suggest to
Microsoft that they add an update or an upgrade that will foolproof the
favorites folder? It's ridiculous that a third party app can delete the
whole lot without the contents ending up in the recycle bin or anywhere.

Restore them from your backup.

Es geht weiter...

They're back! I ran Spybot and cleared out some stuff, including the dread
Smitfraud 888, and my favourites are back. I've made a copy of them now too,
just in case.

Chances are there are more Bad Guys lurking on the machine. Spybot cannot
fully remove SmitFraud infections.

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Pa Bear has great advice; I hope you follow it.

Also, if you're not running a firewall, now is the time to install one.
There are lots of them available, including ZoneAlarm which still has their
freebie version.
And then of course more malware detection: Add things like Spybot and a
couple more. WinPatrol works great for me and I like it but some see it as
a little too "techie". Look back thru old posts and you'll find lots of
recommendations.
