With reference to my above titled post on 10/24/2007:
Mine was a new laptop which came with a pre-installed SMS application.
Contacting the manufacturer's Helpdesk got me uninstalling this software
which sometimes conflicts with WM. Magic! WM now behaves as it should. My
unreserved apologies to Microsoft, and once again thanks to those whose tried
to help me.
