Resuming from standby

Hi,

My parents have a desktop running XP Professional. Its
an Athlon with a Tyan Trinity K7 motherboard. They have
put the machine in standby mode, and nothing seems to
wake it up. We've tried every key on the keyboard (its a
wireless keyboard and mouse) and nothing works, nor the
power keys on the machine itself.

I tried logging an online call with Microsoft themselves
but they want a product id which I dont think I can get
without the machine coming out of standby. Catch 22
methinks :)

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Press the power button and hold it down for at least 5
seconds. This should shut down the machine.
This will get you temporarily back up - it does not fix
the problem however. I just disable sleep mode because I
don't personally like it - if you wish to disable this
mode, do:
right-click on desktop - go to properties.
Screen Saver Tab - click on the Power button.
Here you can tell the computer what to do after certain
amounts of time - I usually pick don't do anything, but
that's just me - set it to whatever you want.

Press the power button for 4-5 seconds. The computer will reboot.

To fix the condition, go to device manager and look for your mouse and
keyboard. Remove any checks from the power option that say "allow this
device to bring computer out of standby".

Reboot! Try standby again. I think you find that, by a quick press on the
computer power button, the computer will wake up.

OK that is much more information and very important
information

Question:
When you turn the power back on, do you get anything at
all on the screen? A splash screen picture for the BIOS?
Any writing at all?
If not, then I (being versed in computer insides) would
open up my computer case and reseat all parts inside
(memory, pci cards, hard drive cables, etc.) Then reboot
and see if that makes a difference.

Investigate the standby subject via help/support. You will notice that it
needs to be supported by the mainboard.

Hi,

All I get is the VDU saying "no signal". In other words,
the Pc is not booting up the OS.

I built the machine, so no problem reseating things only
that the machine is down at my parents and its hassle to
go down and fix it.

Is it really that drastic? No other ideas?

Hi,

Ok, but now the machine is in standby, and possibly
unsupported by the motherboard, any ideas how to get it
out?

Tried pressing the power for 5secs but to no avail....

Thanks for your time,

Steve Huckle

Good - more info that is very important. This means that
your video signal is not reaching the monitor.
Make sure the monitor cable is securely connected both to
the monitor and to the computer. If they are and you
still get the same thing, it most likely is the video
card. Do you have another video card you can swap out to
test?

Pull the plug
