Restricting save location to one folder

Hello,

I would like to know if it is possible to restrict users from
changing the save location for downloaded files (through the standard
download dialog with save/open and the "save as" dialog, ideally) and
have it always stay the same. This is for a library where public
kiosks need to be restricted to be able to save files to floppy only.
Thank you.

Depends on the OS. NTx can protect certain registry keys based
on user and group names. For information about that Run... RegEdit
and open its Help (e.g. press F1); then in the Index tab enter:
permissions, registry

I'm pretty sure that you can inhibit file saving altogether but I don't
know about allowing it selectively. (E.g. open inetres.adm and
do finds for Save)

Also I think you could try using mandatory profiles so that if changes
were made they would only last for each session. Supposedly another
thing about this option is that you can force the profile to be automatically
updated on a timed basis; so you wouldn't necessarily need to rely on
having users log off.

<title>KB307800 - HOW TO: Assign a Mandatory User Profile in Windows XP</title>

(MSKB Boolean search for
"mandatory profile" AND kbWinXPsearch
)

Another approach that I am aware of but know even less about is
using the "Group Policy Editor" (aka gpedit.msc).
In XP press Win-F1 and enter "Group Policy"
for some information about it.

You might get a better answer from a newsgroup which specializes
in security and administration for your OS. This NG deals mostly with
the IE UI and error recovery issues.
