Hi there,
This is going to sound like a strange question, but I've been asked it
and since I only know one way to do this and I'm not allowed, I figured
I'd post it here.
Here's the scenario:
I'm going to be setting up 10 "borrowed" computers in a room for a
conference. All 10 machines are running Windows 2000 Professional.
They all need to have Internet access for the purposes of accessing one
different site each (10 total) between the hours of (I believe 1-4).
But each machine can only have access to one site each.
So...
Computer 1 can only access Site 1
Computer 2 can only access Site 2
Computer 3 can only access Site 3
....
Computer 10 can only access Site 10
The only way I know would work isn't feasible from a cost standpoint
(i.e. slapping a router on each PC and setting a rule restricting the
router and by extension PC from accessing anything but the site in
question.) I was also considering a Net Nanny type of solution, but
since these are "borrowed" and I don't think I'm allowed to load any
additional software on them before they get returned, I don't really
want to go that route either.
So...the question is...is there any way to restrict access to all but
one site in Windows 2000? My initial thought is using hosts.sam and
then writing a batch file to restore the original hosts.sam file when
it's done and running it straight across (I won't be there for the
teardown), but I don't know if wildcards can be used for hosts.sam
(e.g. 0.0.0.0 *, and then a row underneath with the correct site
and IP).
Thanks,
Adam
