When I am looking at the files in a folder view window, is there any way
to restrict the files displayed to be only of a certain extension (.DOC for
example)?

You can type *.doc in the top-right search box

No, that capability disappeared a long time ago.

You can get the same effect by using Search and looking for files with
the extension you want. You can also open a command console ("DOS
box"), navigate to the directory you're interested in and use the
"dir" command.

Also, remember that you can sort the folder by file type. That will
group files of a particular type together, so once you find the bunch
of *.doc files, you've got almost the same thing you're asking for.

Yes, but from a DOS box you can't click on a file name and have the
default application come up.

I think sorting by file type is close enough to what I need. Thanks.

Nope. Doesn't work.

Jim

It works for me.

I'm following this discussion in part because I find the search function
less than transparent, and I do try out various ideas as part of the
unraveling process...

Of course, to do the above, I did have to turn off "Include subfolders" and
retype the *.doc if I wanted to get just one level of results.

I tried it again and it did work. Not sure what happened the first time I
tried it.

I certainly agree with you about the Vista search function being "less than
transparent". I wish I could restore the XP search function.

Well, the same thing happened to me. I installed Ransack Agent just so I
could search with wildcards...

Then I tried *.doc in Explorer again a few weeks later and it worked.

Go figure.

I also heard about the Vista Explorer extended syntax somewhere along the
line, as in searching for ext:doc. See:
