Restricted symbol selection

Using PPT 2003 under Win/XP, attempting to insert a symbol for use as a
bullet.

The sole font listed in the Symbol selection panel is Arial Unicode MS,
although there are many more fonts installed on my system.

The "Recently used symbols" list shows symbols I had previously selected
from several of these fonts, and I can access and use symbols from that
list. The complete list of all available fonts is accessible via the
normal font selection mechanism.

Is there a way to restore the complete list of fonts to the Symbol
selection panel? Or is there another way I can select a symbol, for use
as a bullet, from another font (e.g., Wingdings)?

Try Selecting some text and then Format > Bullets and Numbers >Customize. You
should be able to use any font that you have as a custom bullet.

I agree that I should be able to do this, and that is what I would like
to do, but as I wrote only a single font (Arial Unicode MS) now appears
on the list in the Symbol selection panel. I'd like to restore the
complete list of fonts to this panel.

A few questions that may shed light (or further gloom):

Does this happen with only one presentation (or presentations based on a
certain template) or does it happen with all presentations?

If have another computer available, try moving the presentation to it. Does
the problem "follow the presentation"?

Do you have a locally installed printer driver set as the default printer?

I spot-checked a few of the dozens of presentations on my system, and
this difficulty has arisen in only a single presentation. It appears to
be a fairly recent development: that particular presentation was first
developed circa two years ago, and has been updated roughly quarterly
ever since.

I've just located an older version of that presentation on backup media.
That version seems not to have this problem, so (if necessary) I can
redo my edits based on that older version. However, this would be quite
a painful process, so I would prefer first to explore alternatives.

(Frankly, I'm also curious to find out what may have happened to cause
the described behavior.)

I will try this experiment when another machine becomes available to me;
I currently have only my laptop at my disposal.

I have no locally installed printer per se. I do have a locally
installed driver that produces a pdf file, but it is not set as my
default printer. My default printer is on a local network.

I imagine THAT'S a relief. ;-)

Sometimes you just have to chalk it up to Evil or Infestation by Demons, at least
unless you can get it to reproduce itself.

But before going back and redoing all that work, make a copy of the presentation
and try The Exorcist (aka Round-Tripping):
