restricted space in a cell

I am preparing a form - for employees to fill out on-line. How do I make each cell able to just stop when they type to the end of the line. Isn't there a tool to where you can tell you only want like 72 characters in each cell/line? I've tried just about everything. However, when you type on the lines (or cell) it will continue to type the characters on the bottom part of the cell - so you can only see half of the letters. Help.
 
When you designed the table their is a text length in the
properties area of each field. Set that to the maxumum
number of chars.
