Sadly, Mcafee has wrecked my computer. I now have problems too numerous to
set out. Basically, what I suspect has happened is that my computer was
infected with adware. I used Mcafee antispyware to clean it up and I think it
may have removed vital parts of xp. I do not have an early enough recovery
point. If I put the manufacturers recovery CD in it won't run because it says
the xp version on the computer is newer than that on the CD. What can I do?

Unfortunately, the manufacturers recovery disk only will install on a clean
disk.

If you still have an older version such as Win98 boot disk, you can delete
all the partitions or format, then install the manufacturers recovery disk
and re- install Windows

If the "recovery CD" is an image of the system state as it was at the time
of purchase then it should simply overwrite your present setup. Check the
documentation that came with your computer for running it or visit the
manufacture's site for instructions.

Is this "recovery CD" an actual Windows XP OEM version? If so read here
about creating a slipstream version of XP using your Windows XP OEM disc and
a Microsoft Service Pack you can download

Many thanks for the responses. Fortunately, I have been able to get away with
uninstalling and reinstalling Internet Explorer only. Things seem to be
stable now and I hope I have got away with it. Warning - Be v careful if you
decide to install Mcafee Internet security suite and antispyware, it can
cause havoc for the uninitiated! And their customer support leaves alot to be
desired. I reckon to have spent 18 hrs work on it this weekend - good job the
weather was poor.
