I have to restore a backup of a win2000 server machine that was taken from a
multiprocessor server to a uniprocessor tower. The machine is both a domain
controller and an exchange2000 server. I need to get some older versions of
mailboxes and files from montly backup tapes. I do not want to disrupt my
production environment so I have this other machine will isolate from the
network completely and use.
On the first try after restoring only the system state (I know I need to get
AD back before I try to restore exchange) the machine did not boot (as
expected w/ such different HALs). "Could not start NTOSKRNL.EXE either is
missing or corrupt" or something like that is displayed. I have read the MS
articles on 'in place' upgrades but setup could not even find an
installation to repair. The in place upgrades could fix up the different HAL
situation. When I went to the recovery console to try to manually replace
the NTOSKRNL.EXE file it would not except my password? wierd?
any thoughts out there? I know this is a difficult thing but I also know it
has to be possible!
