Restoring System State on Laptop

Has anyone gone through a restore of the system state from a dead laptop or even at the command line level? I am looking for some good ideas on MS Tools with XP, I noticed from "Restore Active Directory" settings when booting I don't believe this is for restoring the system state or is it? What other good restore practices have you all tried just using XP? What about restore points from a prev. restore point?
