Restoring Search From Address bar

I used to be able to type in, for example, "New York Times", without the
quotes, into the Address Bar in IE 6, click Go, and be taken there.

This works no longer. I cannot recall since when.

This PC is still with IE6 and has all updates current on its Windows XP Pro
SP 2 installation.

Now, when I type the example in and select Go, this is what I get in the
Address Bar:

http:///? New York Times

And the window shows the standard "The page cannot be displayed" message.

I experimented with he search options in Search within Windows Explorer and
also within Internet Options, but could not resolve this.

TIA for any insights.

If it is of any relevance, I seem to have lost this ability in Firefox too!

See this for possible help:

Autosearch has stopped working

If no joy - http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/42.html
The .reg files at the bottom will reset all your search settings to their
defaults as IE was first installed.

Thanks very much for your response. I tried out all the methods contained
therein - however could not get that functionality back.

FWIIW - I restored my machine (temporarily) to where the Firefox version is
1.5.0.7 (instead of 2.0 at present). The Address bar search functionality
returned for Firefox.

I could type in anything - New York Times, Federal Bureau of Investigation,
Wall Street Journal, New York University - and Firefox would take me there,
just by clicking the Go button.

I dimly remember it was some setting that did this for IE 6 too, but cannot,
FTLOM, remember what!!! Ah, the wonders of advancing senility.

Hi Tachyon,

Your searchHook has been hijacked (Yahoo, AOL toolbars)

You can download and run a registry fix at
http://www.iecustomizer.com/?url=SearchHookFixDownload.htm

Thanks very very much. That has at least restored the search functionality
to IE!

It is, however, pretty intriguing what could have hijacked the searchHook -
I have never used any toolbars and am always careful about software
installs!

Regards and thanks again.

Hi Tachyon - Download and run:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/RestoreSearch2.REG to restore
your default Search functionality and reset your prefixes. You'll have to
manually re-select any Search Customizations you may have had, however.

That worked too. Thanks a lot. I save the reg file with the other to use in
times like this.

Also thanks for re-introducing me to Kelly's Corner - that excellent
website! Been a while since I visited it last.

Regards and thanks again.
