My Notepad has disappeared but I apparently restore it using the SFC
utility. My question is, will restoring it from my original Windows disk
cause problems with updates made by SP#1 and #2?

Thanks to all!

As long as the file version is the same, then it should not be a problem. If
you have a system with XP SP1, you may compare if the Notepad.exe version
number is the same as that in the XP SP2 system.

BTW, the C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles (created when you install a Service
Pack on top of the existing install) contains the latest versioned system
files.

Ramesh answered your question, but are you sure it's actually disappeared?
It's more likely that you have only lost the shortcut to it in Start |
Programs.

To check go to Start | Run and type

notepad

If notepad opens, you've only lost the shortcut and recreating it is easy.
If you don't know how to recreate the shortcut, write back for more info.

Good point, Ken.

@JanDG: Note that there are two copies of Notepad.exe, one in the Windows
folder and the other one in Windows\System32 folder. If one of them is
missing, you can always use / copy the file from the other location.
