Did a search and found the following files on my computer:
1.) SPOOLSV.EXE-3A613CE3.PF - Located in Folder: Windows\prefetch (pf File
Type)
2.) spoolsv - Located in Folder: Windows\System32 (57kb application)
3.) spoolsv - Located in Folder: Windows\ServicePack Files\i386 (57kb
application)
4.) spoolsv - Located in Folder: Windows\System32\dllcache (57kb application)
Question can you tell me if these are the only files (and locations) that
are needed? and can you suggest and other software searches that might be
helpful in restoring my printer servives.
Thanks,
John
What happened when you followed Cari's directions to open a command
prompt window and type "net start spooler"?
SPOOLSV.EXE-3A613CE3.PF is in the WindowsXP Prefetch folder. Ignore this.
The other 3 files probably are the same. The one in Windows\System32 is
the one that is active. The one in ServicePack Files\i386 arrived when
you installed the latest service pack (and should have been copied to
Windows\System32. The file in System32\dllcache is used by the Windows
system file checker to restore the file in Windows\System32 should
Windows detect that the latter has become damaged.
You wrote that you were unable to "find" the spooler. How did you
attempt to start this service? The print spooler service can't run
unless the RPC service is started first.
Go to Start>Run and type "services.msc" (without quotes) and click OK.
Scroll down until you get to "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)". The status
should be "Started" and the startup type should be "Automatic". If the
RPC service is stopped, first ensure that the startup type is Automatic.
If it isn't, change it by right-click and selecting Properties. Then
start the RPC service.
Once the RPC service is running, scroll down the list of services until
you get to "Print Spooler". This also should be "started" and
"automatic". If it isn't, make it so.
If you get any error messages when attempting to start RPC or Print
Spooler, include them -- verbatim -- in your next post.
