I did a clean reinstall of Windows XP this morning, and before I did that I
backed up my email inbox folder. The backup created a file called inbox.dbx
but I don't know how to get the emails in the file installed back into my new
inbox on Outlook Express 6

This is info that I have been looking for. Thanks, PA.

I followed the instructions provided in the first link, but as noted in the
last paragraph my backup files did not include "Folders.dbx" so OE does not
see the files. So, I continued following the instructions on how to work
around this problem and when I go to Tools -> Options -> Maintenance -> Store
Folder, the location it shows me does not exist when I go into Windows
Explorer. The last two folders it lists do not exist. How can this be?

I also tried following the 2nd link, but the instructions didn't make sense,
and the third link would not open.

1: If your backup does not include Folders.dbx, a conventional import will
fail.

2: If your message store location does not exist, you need to enable Hidden
Files and Folders.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

If you have a backup of a single dbx file, then this is how to do it.

How to restore individual dbx files:
http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#imp1

This is the same, just worded a little differently.

In the message store in Windows Explorer, click on the dbx file for the
missing folder and drag it to the Desktop at the top of the folder tree.
Open OE and create a folder with the *exact* same name as the one on your
Desktop. Open the new folder and then close OE. (You must do this). Go back
to Windows Explorer and Click Desktop and drag the file from the Desktop to
the OE store folder that you clicked on to reveal the .dbx files. Prompt -
"Do you want to overwrite......."? Click Yes.

*Note* If you have moved the Outlook Express store folder from it's default
location on drive C to another drive, drag the dbx file to a location on
that drive and not the Desktop.

I can't make it any simpler than
http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#importdbx or the last paragraph (before
the Windows Mail section) of http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx (last link
opens fine here; try copy/pasting the link into Addresss Bar)

<QP>
Importing single dbx files into OE

To backup and restore a single OE5 or 6 mail folder, save the appropriate
dbx file. To restore, create a new folder in OE5 or 6 (call it archiv1, for
example) and access it once. Then close OE and find archiv1.dbx and delete
it. Make a copy of the folder you want to restore and rename it to
archiv1.dbx. Then copy that file into the directory where the previous file
was deleted. Open OE and the messages you wanted to restore will be
accessible via opening that archiv1 folder.

Thanks, that helped. My emails are now restored.
