Restoring Active Directory to a different server

Hi,

Please can someone post some conclusive guidelines for restoring a system
state backup to a different hardware setup.

In my opinion, the JS Tip 2799 and the M$ articles are not sufficient. These
guides work for some computers and not for others. What I'm looking for is a
guide I can follow that will work 100% of the time.

If no such guide exists, then why don't microsoft do something about this.
I'm sure there are a large number of organisations out there who want to
create a test environment or need to restore a backup to a new server
because of hardware failure.

Thanks,
William King

Damn it! ..and here I thought I was being helful ;)

What exactly are you trying to do, Will? ...do you have another DC on the
network that you can pull the AD data from while running DCPROMO on the new
server?

Hopefully your hardware vendor will replace the machine with an exact
replica of it of the old one :). I agree that there should be a way of
backing up Active Directory data only (instead of the entire System State)
so it can be restored onto another DC.
