I copied over a file on Windows XP Professional and was wondering if there is
a way to restore that file to it's previous state. System Restore will not
change it back as it says it picked nothing up to restore.

Thanks

Which file was copied?

From where to where?

Was anything deleted?

Was this a system file? If so, what exactly did you do and why?

Regarding System Restore, this page should help you with
troubleshooting:

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

system restore only restores
system files and not user
data/personal files.

however, if you had
sufficient unused disk
space,

then it may be that
the system didn't overwrite
that deleted file.

so what you might try to
use is a third party program
like "recuva"
