I have a .msbcm backup file that I am attempting to restore on another
computer running Outlook 2003, version 11.8118.8132 SP2, with BCM, version
2.00.5324.00 SP2.

Whe I go into the Business Tools menu "Manage Database" and select "Restore
Database" I provide the path to the .msbcm backup file, which is on a local
drive, and it does attempt to decompress and restore the database.

However, after a minute or so I get an error which states the following:
"The backed-up database has on-disk structure version 611. The server
supports version 539 and connot restore or upgrade this database. RESTORE
FILEIST is terminating abnormally."

How can I restore this database on this computer? What do I need to do? Any
help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Here's what I think is happening.

The msbcm file is just a zip file with the sql server backup file in
it.
BCM extracts the sql backup file and then asks sql to restore it.
I suspect that it's sql reporting the error.

Is it possible that the other computer has an earlier version of MSDE/
Sql Server? Perhaps you need to install a Sql Service Pack.

Luther,

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, it is possible that the other computer had an earlier version of
MSDE/SQL Server. I don't have the laptop anymore so I cannot check. This is
just another testament to the wise words "Don't just back-up....check your
back-ups".

I installed SQL 2000 SP4 but I had the same results. Thanks for trying
though. If anyone has another idea or wants to take a crack at restoring this
file just let me know. It is 5meg in size. I really want to end up with a
..csv file so I can import just the contact data. Thanks!

If you export your data to a BCM file, you should then be able to
import it on the other machine, and the BCM file should carry most of
your data. I noticed that the offline feature uses BCM files to
synchronize the shared and offline databases, and that synchronizes
the two database with high fidelity.
