To test other hardware with which I was having a problem, I used Device
Manager to unistall a Targus USB optical mouse.
I expected that when I plugged in the mouse again and started Windows XP
Home that it would be found as new hardware but this did not happen.
I can find no way to have it recognised again in Device Manager.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks for your suggestion Bob, but when I took the mouse to PC World and it
worked OK for them.

Things have moved on a bit since I made my enquiry. Using Ashampoo
WinOptimizer I now have a new Belkin mouse (which I am trying to use to
replace the Targus) recognised in Device Manager. (This was the mouse I took
to PC World before I uninstalled it also because it did not work.)

Unfortuantely the Belkin mouse still does not work.

In Device Manager it is listed under Human Interface Devices in two ways:
1. HIP-compliant device
2. USB Human Interface Device.
Both are shown as 'this device is working properly.'

This is back to the way it was when I consulted PC World (from which I
bought it) before I uninstalled it. When tested by PC World, the latter (2)
was listed under 'Mice and other pointing devices' not Human Interface
Devices.

There was no installation disk for the mouse.

I tried to update the driver in Device Manager by allowing it to search the
Windows database, but it reported that there was no driver better than the
one being used.
