restoring a dc

Chris

We currently have 1 domain controller which has a corrupted ntds.dit file.
In our network, we have 7 other domain controllers, which all have their own
copy of the ntds.dit file. Does anybody know if I can just copy the file
from one of the working dc's to the one with the corrupt file?

Thanks,
Chris

I would dcpromo this back to a member server, or try dcpromo /force or if
that doesn't work then remove and do a metadata cleanup, then repromote. If
you have to do a metadata cleanup if I were you I would consider renaming
the dc append a numeric value after it.

We tried to run dcpromo, but are unable because we can only boot to active
restore mode. It won't allow us to run it in "safe mode".

If this only holds dc respondsibilities and isn't a fsmo role holder then
probably the easiest way is to just delete the dc and restart. Did you have
a chance to look at the link? Do you know the DC's respondsibility level in
the domain?
