System Restore is a great "short term" repair tool when it is working
correctly. However there are various reasons for restore points can become
invalid and unusable. When this happens System Restore becomes an
ineffective tool. (NOTE: System restore is not an effective "long term"
repair tool. Disaster recovery software, such as drive imaging programs,
are the tools of choice for this scenario.)

Since the data for system restore is kept as a chain. This means that if
one restore point "goes bad," it can ruin many or all remaining restore
points. The invalid restore points cannot be removed on a one by one basis.
Instead, all restore points need to be removed. Since they are not working
anyhow, this is not great loss.

To clear the restore points, turn System Restore off: Open System
properties to the System Restore page. Check the box to turn off System
Restore on all drives. Restart the system. Then turn System Restore back on
so that it can start creating new restore points.
