I posted this 1 week ago in the AD group and did receive some
suggestions, but they have not worked. I am trying a different group to
see if I can pick something up here.
I am trying to restore a Domain Controller/Exchange server on a box in
our test environment. The current hardware is a ML370G2 running Windows
Server 2000. I have tried restoring into a Virtual Machine (VMware) and
to an older Compaq box (ML530) to no avail. I repeatedly end up with an
Inaccessible Boot Device STOP error.
I have used these articles for reference:
How to perform a disaster recovery restoration of Active Directory on a
computer with a different hardware configuration
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=263532
How to move a Windows installation to different hardware
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=249694
How to perform an in-place upgrade of Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292175/
I have tried the various repair options from setup, even an upgrade in
place, but cannot get past the STOP error. I have done parallel
installs of Windows 2000 Server and copied the working system file from
c:\2KRCV\system32\config (parallel install) to c:\winnt\system32\config
(restored install). This gets me past the boot error, but then I only
get to the very beginnings of the desktop background and the machine
reboots - even in safe mode and after an upgrade in place (which never
makes it to mini-windows after it initially copies files).
I have done restores of AD and Exchange from one VM to another VM - but
that totally avoids the different hardware problems I am running into.
Does anyone have tips on restoring to different hardware? I really feel
like I am just overlooking something somewhere and the fresh perspective
might help.
Thanks!
