I'm having trouble with system restore restoring system check points. These
are check points that Windows XP creates automatically. But when trying to
restore to any of the check points the process begins and after the reboot
is completed I get a message saying the system could not be restored.
System check points are not very useful if you can't restore to them. Has
anyone else had this problem? Any ideas what's causing this behavior?

Thanks,

Don;
There may be corrupted data in system Restore.
Turn off/on System Restore to delete corrupted files:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Click System Restore Settings on left side.
Check "Turn off System Restore", click OK, follow prompts and reboot.
This deletes ALL Restore Points including corruption.
Then go back and turn on system Restore and create a Restore Point.

Jupiter,

Yesterday I shut off System Restore, rebooted, then turned it on again and
rebooted. This was suggested in one response to my plea for help. This is
about the sixth time I have done it. Anyway, when I did this it created a
new restore point yesterday. Today I tried to restore to that point and
again after the whole procedure finished the restore window comes up with a
message that my computer cannot be restored to that point. What do you
suggest?? I am thinking I will have to do a complete new install of Windows
XP.

Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Thanks.

I've used this before and it worked great, but now I've the same problem as you. where can we go to get a answer?

I had a similar problem. My computer was running so slow for weeks and I couldn't find any solution that worked. I tried to use the system restore and nothing worked. Here's what finally worked for me: Restart your computer and immediately begin pressing the F8 key a bunch of time during the reboot until you come to the "Safe Mode" menu. One of the options on the safe mode menu references "Restoring To The Last Known Good Configuration" which is somewhere in the middle of the screen and you can just arrow down to it. Now after doing this I had to go back and reinstall some Windows updates that were un-done during the restore. My computer works great now. I haven't had any issues with a slow response. Hope this helps.

Hopefully not a reinstall.
First try these three things:

1. http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/Slowcom.htm

2. Check for damaged/missing System Files
Start/Run
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
Have the Windows XP CD available.

3. Repair Installation:

Windows Updates will need to be reinstalled.
Data should be safe, back-up important data just in case.
Install Service Pack first and by itself.
Then install ALL Critical Updates no more than 4 at a time,

Disconnect the network/modem cable before starting repair and do NOT
reconnect the cable until repair is completed and firewall is
installed/enabled.
