Restore Problem

I am unable to pick a date to set the Restore function. I have used this
feature before but it is not working now.
I had installed Windows Defender a couple of days ago and started having
internet connection problems today. I un-installed Windows Defender and
wanted to set a restore to a prior point before the installation of Windows
Defender.
Doe anyone know how to repair the Restore Function??

Start by right clicking my computer and look at the system restore tab.
Disable then enable system restore.

If that doesn't work search for a file called sr.inf. Make sure you search
hidden files and folders its the more advanced options bit on the search
window. Then right click sr.inf and choose install. This will re-install
system restore.

My experience and understanding is that if you disable and re-enable System
Restore, you lose any earlier restore points. Ed.Rob's problem is that he
wishes to restore to a time previous to the installation of Windows Defender,
and he is unable to do this. Disabling wont help you here.

I reckon he will probably end up by having to back up his data and starting
over.

Hi Bert,
There was one restore point available, the one that was set when Windows
Defender was uninstalled.
Since that was the only one available I chose to restore to thaty point.
The restore worked which then sowed two more resore points : one when I
installed Windows Defender and anothe one when I uninstalled it. Also the
restore one was listed.
Cannot access any more points for prior days and months!
I wonder what happened to my other restore points from the days before??
Any Ideas?
Thanks,

Ed Roberts

I though he said system restore didn't work. I gave advice to get it working
again not restore previous restore points.

What actually happens when you choose any of the restore points available?
If system restore tells you it cannot restore the point you chose then you
must choose a different restore point. If none of them work then you will
have to turn system restore off then back on which will delete all points
but if none are working you wont be any worse off.

System restore is not a backup program nor is it a replacement for a backup
program. It is a get out of trouble program which is great if it works but
should never be the only option.

Hi Glen
I found the 7 files and not sure what to do. Plus the install wanted a XP CD
which I did not have so am in process of creating one from my Dell software.
They did not ship one.
Meantime I went back to the only restore point showm in the History which
was the de-installation of Windows Defender a so am at that point now but
there is still no history from prior days or months which there were before.
Can we find the history again??

My problem is that my internt connection dros off after 10 minutes so I have
to reboot to get back to you. Strange situation!

Ed

Hi Tonyo,
Thanks for the point as it looks like all my previous Restore Points are
gone. I do use Norton Ghost so maybe the only way is to go back to the prior
day with Norton and reload the entire disk.
Does this make sense?

That's correct.

Ed.Rob's problem
is that he wishes to restore to a time previous to the installation
of Windows Defender, and he is unable to do this. Disabling wont help
you here.

That's also correct, but it isn't at all clear that he needs to do what he
wants to do. Disabling and reenabling SR won't help him with his internet
connection problems, but it *will* get System Restore working again for the
future, and, for that reason, he should do it.

I reckon he will probably end up by having to back up his data and
starting over.

That's highly uinlikely and a draconian solution to what is very possibly a
simple problem. Ed Rob hasn't gone into any details about what his problem
is. Certainly before reformatting and reinstalling, he should describe the
kind of connection he has and what his problems are in more detail. It's
likely that someone here can help him, and reinstalling and reformatting
won't be required.

Well it appears the problem is messing restore points. Did you take a
look at the following page for possible causes?

Troubleshooting missing restore points:

Let's also take a look at Event Viewer for any System Restore logs that
may have been created recently that may help us diagnose the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title "Source" at the top of the source name column in
the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the
two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event
information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two
event here. There's no need to post duplicate Event ID's.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

Hello Bert Kinney,
Thanks for this information as I now understand Restore Points much better
and will learn not to rely on them as much as I have in the past! Found this
one logged early this morning.

Defender.

At any rate I would say that adding Windows Defender caused the first
problem in losing the restore points. I will be more careful in the future.

Thanks Again,
Ed Roberts

The first event log suggest System Restore is set to monitor a
drive/partition other than the one Windows is installed on. I would
suggest stop monitoring all drives/partitions other then the one Windows
is installed on. This is a common cause of missing restore points.
