Restore point problem

Hello group,

I've posted with this problem before, but have not been able to find a
solution. Now I have more information, so maybe someone can help.

I have task scheduler set up to create a restore point once a day. The
history panel shows that the restore point is created on schedule, yet it
does not show up in the system restore panel under system properties/system
protection. Nor does the free space on the hard drive shrink by a gig or so,
as I'd expect. All the settings in task scheduler seem to be correct, and I
can create restore points manually. It's just that the automatic feature does
not work. Has anyone experienced a problem like this?

I'm using Vista Home Premium. Oodles of space allocated for restore points.

Have you tried checking System Restore for the restore points? System
Restore>Choose Different Restore Point.

Is that really necessary? You must be using a shitload of hard drive space.

What are you doing to your system on a regular basis that needs system
restore points? Are you installing new hardware drivers every day? Or
deleting Windows system files at random for your own amusement?

Once every couple of weeks, just to be on the safe-side? Sure. But
every day??
 
If you don't find a solution for this I do have a fairly simple workaround
that I use. I use this because I could not get Task Scheduler to run the way
I wanted it to.

1) Download and install Kirby Alarm.

2) Register Kirby Alarm. Name is "Anyone", Reg No: is "20532"
3) Right-click the shortcut for Kirby Alarm and under Compatibility, check
Run As Administrator, Run in compatibility mode for Windows Xp.
4) Use Task Scheduler to run Kirby Alarm at Logon with highest privileges.
5) Download and install SysRestorePoint.exe v12

6) Right-click the shortcut for SysRestorePoint.exe and under Compatibilty,
check Run As Administrator
7) Setup Kirby Alarm to run SysRestorePoint.exe for whenever you want ( I do
it once a day at 1:00 A.M.)

This should work for you. If you are not logged on at the time specified to
run SysRestorePoint.exe it will run at next logon. Of course if you are
happy with the way Windows Task Scheduler works you can use that to run
SysRestorePoint.exe instead of Kirby Alarm

Hi Ramone,

Yes, I checked System Restore Points, and there are none there except the
ones I create manually. I downloaded Sysrestorepoint.exe, the one for vista,
tried running it and got an error message saying run-time error, access
denied, with some numbers.
 
Well, I feel dumb. I hadn't clicked "run as administrator." When I did that,
the restore point was created. However, can you tell me how to set up task
scheduler to run it?

Ok , here it is you will get a prompt to name it at the end. Just name it
anything you'll recognize. The only reason you have to take this step is
because Vista will not run Kirby Alarm at Startup unless you have the Task
Scheduler launch it in this manner.

1. Remove the program from the Startup folder or the Run registry key
2. Launch the Task Scheduler

e.g. Start Menu ¨ All Programs ¨ Accessories ¨ System Tools
3. From the Actions panel on the right, select Create Task...
4. Go to the Security Options on the General tab
1. Select an user account with administrative privileges
2. Select the radio button Run only when user is logged on
3. Check the box Run with highest privileges
5. Go to the Triggers tab and click New...
1. In Begin the task, select At log on
2. In the Settings options, select All users
3. In the Advanced Settings options, check the box Enabled
4. Click OK to close the dialog
6. Go to the Actions tab and click New...
1. For Action, select Start a program
2. In the Settings options, browse for the Program/Script you want to
execute on startup
3. Click OK to close the dialog
7. Go to the Settings tab
1. Check the box Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is
missed
2. Uncheck the box Stop the task if it runs longer than
8. Make any other desired settings
9. Click OK to save and close the task properties
