Restore notepad?

This morning Norton AV flashed a warning on the screen saying it had
detected a virus in the file notepad.exe and had quarantined the file.

I tried to repair the file, could not do it, so I deleted notepad.exe. I
realized that doing this would remove the notepad from my system.

Now, when I do Start>Accessories>Notepad, I get an error message that the
system can't find a file needed -- obviously becaue notepad.exe is gone.

I tried a System Restore but for some reason it tells me it cannot restore
to any of the restoration points I select.

How do I restore Notepad? Can I plug in my WinXP CD and restore notepad
from there?

Thanks.

Hi Joe,

See if you have a copy of Notepad.exe in C:\Windows\System32 or
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386 and if so, copy the file to C:\Windows
or
You can expand a fresh copy of notepad.exe to C:\Windows\System32 by doing
the following........
Have the XP install CD in the CDROM drive.
Go to Start>Run and key in cmd then click on OK or hit ENTER. This will open
a Command Prompt window. In the command prompt window, key in the following
command and then hit ENTER:
expand X:\i386\notepad.ex_ c:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe
(where you will replace the X with the actual drive letter designation for
your CDROM drive)
Exit the command prompt window by keying in exit then hitting ENTER.

Regards,

To Reinstall Notepad:

Go to this folder C:\Windows\System32\dllcache
Click Tools/Folder Options Turn on "Show hidden files and folders".

Then turn OFF "Hide protected operating system files".
This is your backup of Windows system files which Notepad is one of.

Find Notepad.exe, right click and click copy. Next go to the shortcut for notepad in your start menu.
Right click and choose properties.

Click "find target". This will open the containing folder.
Right click in this folder and click paste. Windows will tell you the file already exists do you want to
replace it.
Click yes and you have restored notepad.

Go back to Folder Options and hide the system files and hidden files again.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions. I opened Windows Explorer, went to
the C drive and searched, found notepad.exe in a folder, moved it to
C:/Windows and everything is fine.

Thanks again.
