I made the foolish decision to restore my computer using the restore disk because it was not running as smoothly as it normally does. Did exactly as it says in the book but now when I switch it on it starts to run and then just beeps on a blank screen. What have I done?

Hi Kelly,

Are you attempting to boot the restore disk or have you already completed
that operation?
What seemed to be the original problem?

My computer just didn't seem to be what it was and I wanted to start again knowing what I know now about XP, start afresh with the system all sparkly and new. I have put the disk in and it says it's done its business and to remove disk and press any button. It then goes through the opening up but it gets to a point and says "searching for boot memory not found" and then it searches for the floppy and then nothing but beepin

Scared and confused!!1

Hi Kelly,

Does the restore procedure actually seem to be doing anything? Or does it
quickly flash to the finished message?

It goes through the whole business. Takes about twenty minutes and then the "remove disk and press any key" window comes up, which I do and then it begins to restart and then the "searching for boot record not found" message happens and then the bleeping

I don't know if this may be of any consequence but I did change my system from FAT32 to NTFS, could this be part of the problem??

Hi Kelly,

Changing the file system should not be a factor. However, is your recovery
process destructive or non-destructive (does it erase the original
installation and replace it with a factory image?)? If destructive, I would
suggest that you remove the existing partition and rebuild it aspart of the
setup routine. Also, if any etra peripherals are attached, particularly zip
drives, remove them during installation.
