When I try to restore my computer it will only let me go
back to November. I would like to go back to September 1.
Can I do that? Thanks

You can't go back any further then the restore points are.
Did you make restore point for the 1st of September?

Hi Joni,

You can't. The system can only hold just so many restore points. As newer
ones are created, older ones are removed. If the utility doesn't list any
points available from that time, then there are none.

Do you have to initialise Restore points or does XP create them for you. I
haven't done anything with Restore Points yet. I suppose I should really
get to grips with how you do a backup as well. I've never done one of those
neither.

Hello Lynn,

By default, a new restore point is created each day or when some change is
made to the system, i.e., adding programs, XP updates, etc. You can create a
new point anytime you want by going to System Restore and choosing "Create a
Restore Point".

Also by default, 12% of the disk space is allocated to system restore. You
can change the space, if you wish. When a new point is created, the oldest
one is deleted. If you have a primary drive in the 20 Gig. or above range,
you may want to change the allocated space for restore. This can be done by
opening system restore and on the left side of the screen, you will see
"System Restore Settings", click it. You will see a "page" that has a tab
that says "System Restore". Highlight your drive, if need be, and click on
the settings button. There, you will see a slider that you can move to suit
your needs.

Personally, I think 1 Gig is at least enough for system restore. To each
his/her own.

Thanks jax for your help. Excellent as usual. I feel relieved to know that
it is automatically doing Restore points while I am new to the laptop and
OS. Tonight I will go on Help & Support and see if I can find the details
for how I do a Backup as well. Do I Back up everything on the laptop or is
it just certain files?

Hi again Lynn,

I will probably get flak from this but, I have no confidence in XP's backup.
It is skimpy, at best, in XP Pro. and worthless in the Home edition. A 3rd
party application would be your best bet for a real backup. I don't have a
name of one for you, sorry. I keep everything on another disk The only
backup I will recommend is the registry backup ERUNT. The link follows.

http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/
It includes NTREGOPT, which is a registry de-fragmented.

System restore does backup the registry and other critical files but, it is
a good idea to have a real backup, just in case. The on-board registry
backup will not completely restore the registry, ERUNT will.

Ok Lynn, now I'm ready for all the arguments others will, no doubt, have.

Hope this helps you.

JAX, BTW, thanks for the vote of confidence.

.
No, I did not so I guess I'm out of luck. The reason I
want to do that is I'm missing a few features I used to
have when doing my pictures. When I put my camera memory
card and the pictures are up loaded there was a side
panel that had picture tasks which included copy this
picture to a cd and the task bar would have an icon
saying you have pictures ready to copy to a cd. That
doesn't happen now. I have to move to my pictures then
go to record now and make a cd. The other way was
easier. I hope this makes sense.

Reinstall your camera software, then - but first check your View & Options
to make sure you haven't unchecked something.
